28 Apr 99SEAT BELTS FOR YOUNGEST SCHOOL BUS TRAVELLERS IN POOLE
The Borough of Poole has introduced measures to ensure that the youngest children who qualify for free transport to school in Poole have access to seat belts whilst travelling. The issue was raised following concerns expressed by parents of children who travel by bus to St Mary's Combined School, Poole.Previously children travelling to St Mary's were supplied with coaches, which had seat belts as required under legislation on coach travel. When the contract was re-let, the new contractor provided buses which have no legal requirement for seat belts.
Due to the young age of the children and the distances travelled, an agreement has been reached with the new contractor and over the next few weeks, the buses will be fitted with seat belts.
The new proposals by the Borough of Poole were discussed with parents at a meeting at St Mary's School on Monday evening and will be put into action as soon as possible.
Dr Shirley Goodwin, Policy Director said: "The safety of children is paramount. There are a high proportion of very young children on these buses who have to travel quite long distances. It is important that we listen to the concerns of the parents and that they feel sure their children are properly protected whilst they are in our care".
John McVey, Passenger Transport Manager added: "Statistics have shown that it is 8 times safer to travel by bus or coach than seat belted in a car. Travelling by bus is not only proven to be safer but also far less damaging to our local environment".
The policy on transport for young children to school will be discussed by the Education Committee at its meeting in June. Vic Sandel, Head of Education Policy and Planning said: "Members of the Education Committee have placed great importance on consulting with parents and listening to their views, with parent representatives now participating on the Education Committee".
