27 Jul 06Kids Get Their Skates On At Fleetsbridge
A new skateboard facility and BMX track at Fleetsbridge will open on Friday 28 July giving hundreds of youngsters the environment they need to enjoy their sports safely and in harmony with the local community.
Following concerns raised by local councillors regarding problems caused by casual BMX users around Creekmoor Ponds, the Borough of Poole’s Leisure Services together with the local community identified the site at Fleetsbridge, on the border of Oakdale and Creekmoor, as a possible location for a recreational facility.
The new site has plenty of open space, already had an existing mini half pipe skateboard ramp and is also located under the flyover providing the opportunity for use in wet weather.
The development work, which was funded by developer funding contributions for Creekmoor and Oakdale wards, donations from the Creekmoor Community Association and B&Q
, has been carried out over recent weeks to install a range of exciting skateboarding equipment and import soil to create a circular bike track.
The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Mrs Judy Butt said: “It has been a pleasure to work with my ward colleagues, Councillors Rampton and Burden to secure this much needed facility for our local youngsters. Their input and drive has been invaluable and without it this superb site would not have been possible. Having an area like this for young people means that they can enjoy the sports they love in a dedicated and safe area and in harmony with the local needs of our neighbouring communities whilst keeping fit and healthy at the same time.”
Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “It is important that we provide facilities that young people want and at the same time make better use of open space for children and young people and as such, we are delighted to provide this new facility for the local community.”
