Civic Pride in Poole's Young Heroes

A teenage trio of brave young people from Poole were the special guests of Poole's Mayor Cllr Les Burden earlier today.

Together with their parents, Hamworthy teenagers Sam Shinar, Matthew Pepper and Noel Creech had tea with the Mayor as part of a special thank you for their bravery for rescuing a man trapped in mudflats.

In July, the young people spotted the man waving as they were out on their boat in Lytchett Bay where they then proceeded to struggle for over an hour in order to pull the man to safety, despite being in danger of sinking themselves.

Presenting them with special certificates for bravery, the Mayor of Poole Cllr Les Burden, said: "This was a wonderful act of selflessness from these lads.  By working together they helped to save someone at a critical time and in a situation that could have been much worse and I want to thank them.  They are an example of the many young people in our town who we can be very proud of."

Matthew Pepper, aged 13, said: "It was quite scary when we first saw someone waving but as soon as we realised he was in trouble we tried to dig him out but it was really difficult."

Sam Shinar, aged 13, said: "When we realised we couldn't get him out, I went to the shops at Turlin Moor to raise the alarm."

Noel Creech, aged 13, said: "Our friends made fun of us for a few days after it was all over calling us heroes but it's ok now.  Our parents were really shocked when they found out that we were meeting the Mayor.  Everyone has been really good and we especially want to thank PC Tim Davis and the Police."
