14 May 99TURLIN MOOR - MAKE YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNT!
A group of young women from Turlin Moor have been nominated to receive an award at a prestigious ceremony on Monday 17 May at Kingston Maurwood College, Dorchester. The awards presented by Johnny Ball will celebrate the launch of National Adult Learners' Week taking place 17-23 May.The group of residents were nominated for their achievements during a "Make Your Experience Count " course, designed to promote personal development and raise self esteem. The course was commissioned by Turlin Moor Community Liaison Project based at Turlin Moor Community Centre.
Over 10 weekly sessions, course members examined a variety of issues such as presenting yourself, coping with stress and saying what you mean.
Ronnie Murray, Course Tutor said: "To begin with, many of the group held quite negative views about the future but as the course progressed, members became more confident which increased their motivation and sense of self worth. "
She added: "The progress made has been wonderful with a large proportion of the group returning to either full or part time employment and others moving back into education. It has been a great privilege to work with this group whose humour and range of life experiences has helped give them the confidence to face future challenges."
Helene Moody, a course member said: "The course was great and very often challenging. I'm glad I stuck it out as it has given me the skills to cope and continue with my Access to Art and Design course. I have now been selected for interview at Bournemouth University's Arts Institute and am heavily involved in setting up the Community Arts Project on the estate."
It is hoped that once funding for a second course has been secured, the same opportunities will be made available to a new group of residents from Turlin Moor.
Turlin Moor Community Liaison Project is jointly funded by The Borough of Poole, Dorset TEC, Dorset Health Authority and the Government's Single Regeneration Budget. The project was established to raise the self esteem of Turlin Moor's community by increasing and sustaining personal, social and economic achievements. The project runs in tandem with Boscombe West Community Liaison.
Adult Learners' Week Awards Ceremony is sponsored by Dorset TEC. The presentation will take place on Monday 17 May 1999, at Kingston Maurwood College, Dorchester and begins at 7.00pm. The awards will be presented by writer and presenter Johnny Ball, famous for programmes such as "Think of a Number" and "Johnny Ball Reveals All".
