Community Exercise Classes With A Heart

Patients who have recently had a heart attack or cardiac surgery can now take part in special community exercise classes to aid their rehabilitation thanks to a new partnership initiative between the Borough of Poole’s Leisure Services, Poole Heart Support Group link will open in new windowand the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at Poole Hospital.

For the first time in Poole, Phase 3 Cardiac Rehabilitation patients can now have the choice of accessing regular fitness care they need to recover in a community setting as an alternative to a hospital environment.

Starting on Tuesday 11 July a small team of nurses and fitness instructors qualified through the British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR) link will open in new window will be facilitating a 10 week programme of exercise classes at Broadstone Leisure Centre to help prepare cardiac patients physically for normal everyday life.

The classes are hoped to be the first of 4 ten week programmes over a 10 month period and will be followed by Poole Heart Support Group’s link will open in new windowPhase 4 continuous exercise programme.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “We are delighted to be involved in this partnership initiative to bring exercise out into the community, particularly to those who need it most. We fully support new ideas on helping people regain their independence and highlighting how important and easy it is to make exercise a regular part of their daily lives.”

Adrian Dawson, Director of Public Health at Poole Primary Care Trust link will open in new windowsaid: “Experiencing a major heart event has a significant impact on people’s lives and it is important that cardiac patients are offered choice and good accessibility for their rehabilitation needs to help get them back on the road to recovery.  This community based initiative is a major development in meeting these needs and we look forward to bringing these benefits to a wider audience”

Broadstone Leisure Centre offers first class community fitness facilities and actively supports programmes of exercise and physical activity that help people recover quickly from injury and poor health.
