NEW MAYOR AND SHERIFF FOR THE BOROUGH OF POOLE

Mayor of Poole Cllr Bill Wretham said: "Whilst we are not Poole-born residents, my wife Peggie and I have been enjoying the beauty of the town and the friendliness of the people since 1951. Therefore, as a relative new comer, it is a great honour for me to be Mayor of Poole in the Millennium year. In addition to its distinguished and proud history, Poole has many features which will ensure the town's successful future as we cross into this new era. If in my role as Mayor I can make the world more aware of Poole, do some good and help other people, I will be a happy man."

Cllr Joyce Jones, Sheriff of Poole, who will be supporting the Mayor in civic duties and responsibilities, said: "I am proud to be the latest in a long line of Sheriffs and proud to be a citizen of the Historic Borough of Poole. The Great Charter states that the Sheriff should be a 'discreet, fit and proper person. I shall do my very best to fulfil those conditions."

Cllr Graham Curtis in his outgoing Mayoral speech said: "Over the last twelve months Elizabeth and I have had so many unforgetable days which we have been privileged to celebrate with the people of Poole. The 750th Anniversary Celebrations, Royal Marines Freedom March and Day in the Life of Poole are just a few of the many we will all remember. I would like to thank everyone for making this such a proud and memorable year to be Mayor."
