20 May 99POOLE PARTNERSHIP PROJECT
An exciting project involving secondary schools in Poole and their independent school colleagues has just been announced. The Borough has been successful in bidding for a special grant from the DfEE to fund this initiative. The aim is to provide extra curriculum opportunities for groups of able and gifted students in literacy, mathematics and art / design. In doing so, it is hoped that not only will students increase their expertise but that it will also build stronger links with the local community.
It is hoped that about 180 students in total will be involved, aged between 12 and 14 years. A series of workshops will be set up which will be led by teachers from the schools involved as well as experts from outside.
Jeff Hart, Chief Adviser for the Borough of Poole, is enthusiastic about this project.
"This is a unique opportunity for able students from across the whole of Poole to develop their talents still further in a collaborative way. Joint use of facilities and resources between those schools maintained by the LEA and independent schools in the Borough should have great benefits. This is part of our continued drive to raise standards but will also enable all concerned to share good practice."
These benefits had also been highlighted by School Standards Minister Estelle Morris when announcing the national details, which will benefit over 19,000 pupils. "It is important," she commented, "if we are to raise standards across the board that both sides of the education service work together, develop links and share best practice."
