20 May 99ON YOUR FEET
Pupils and parents in Poole are being encouraged to get on their feet as part of a 'Walk to School' week. Launched by the Borough of Poole's Transportation Services, the scheme forms part of the Travelwise campaign which aims to reduce traffic congestion and vehicle pollution outside schools. The Borough of Poole's Transportation Services have been working in partnership with the local community, schools, parents and local Police Officers to reduced traffic congestion outside schools.
Every pupil has been issued with information leaflets giving advice to parents and carers to encourage children to travel safely. The safety benefits of walking to school were also stressed to parents during seat belt checks. As a result more parents have chosen to walk children to school instead of travelling by car.
Mrs Apps, School Crossing Patrol, Bearwood Primary said: "Many parents I speak to are beginning to realise that they do not need to use their cars for the school run and are finding instead that they enjoy the much less stressful walk! Already Baron's Road is not nearly so congested and fewer vehicles passing through my crossing point make it much safer for everyone."
With all Poole's first, middle, combined and primary schools taking part, it is hoped that even more parents will walk with their children to school. Less congestion and more exercise means healthier children, healthier parents and a safer environment.
