BIKE BUGS PICNIC IN PARK

Tempting tastes are on offer to encourage Borough of Poole employees to get on their bikes as part of National Bike to Work Day, taking place on Wednesday 16 June 1999.

The Borough of Poole's Bicycle User Group (BUG) are holding a lunch time picnic in Poole Park for all employees cycling to work on the day. As extra encouragement, each cyclist will receive a goody bag of food donated by Tesco and Sainsburys, together with information on safe cycling and "green" travel.
An expert, "Dr Bike" from Halfords bike section will also be on hand to carry out bicycle safety checks.

BUG was established to promote cycling, better facilities for cyclists, act as a forum to share views and to have fun.

The picnic supports the Borough of Poole's Employee Travel Plan which aims to encourage more Borough employees to manage their journey to work in an environmentally friendly way. Staff will be asked to sign up to a longer term commitment to cycling.

Kathy Saunders, Travel Awareness Officer said: "We have been helping people look at how they travel to work with information on greener forms of transport such as bus services, car sharing and cycling - a healthy and practical transport option that is also lots of fun!"

Currently approximately 6% of staff cycle to work. Due to the campaign's success, the bike cage at the Civic Centre is to be enlarged to accommodate the increased numbers of bikes brought to work.
