ALL THAT TRASH

Young people in Poole are re-using the town's rubbish as part of Trash, a youth project which gives groups the chance to develop artistic skills and learn about co-operation and the environment.

Using recyclable cans donated by Perry's Recycling, spray paint, nails, timber and other materials donated by B&Q (Fleetsbridge), groups are working with Dorset sculptor, Tony Heaton to design a series of sculptures.

Tony Heaton said: "The project gives young people the chance to raise issues which are important to them. So far, ideas have focused on dolphins and the sea, raising concerns about pollution and its effect on wildlife."

Sponsored by the Co-operative who donated £1000, Trash has been developed in partnership with the Borough of Poole as part of International Co-operative Day on 3 July 1999.

Caroline Tendler, Chair of Co-operative's Wessex Member Relations Committee said: "Scheme's like Trash show just what can be achieved when people co-operate locally. Each household in Poole creates over one tonne of rubbish every year. Businesses as well as people need to be responsible for their waste and by supporting Trash we can help to raise the issue. It is fantastic to see things that we throw away being reused in an exciting way that inspires young people".

Over the next three weeks young carers, young people in foster care and an activity group of young people with special needs all aged 11-19, will be working together on sculptures which will form the theme of a performance on International Co-operative Day.
