'WALKING BUS'

A brand new 'walking bus' for children at Sylvan First School in Poole will be launched on Monday 21 June 1999 as part of National Child Safety Week.

Parent volunteers, recruited from each of the schools, have trained as 'drivers', 'conductors' and 'escorts' to ensure that children in their care arrive at school safe and sound.

The bus comes complete with a 'driver', 'conductor' and 'escort' in florescent jackets and flashing armbands. Each 'bus driver' is equipped with a rucksack containing first aid equipment and every child who gets on the bus wears an armband. Children can join the bus at a series of 'bus stops' along the designated route.

The pilot project, which will also be launched at Elmrise Primary School in Bournemouth, is funded by Travelwise, the campaign to encourage sensible car use and promote alternative transport options including walking, cycling and public transport.

Lesley Hart, Road Safety Education Officer, Borough of Poole said: "Traditionally there have been on-going problems of congestion, illegal parking and pollution outside schools. With exciting new initiatives like the Walking Bus, we hope parents will be encouraged to let their children walk to school accompanied and in safety."
