COLOURFUL SUBWAY OPENS IN POOLE

Poole's most colourful subway will be officially opened by Mayor, Councillor Bill Wretham, on Wednesday 30 June at 10.00 am.

The Fighter Pilot subway at Adastral Road, Canford Heath provided the canvas for pupils from Ad Astra First and Ashdown Schools to paint their colourful designs as part of National Green Transport Week (7-14 June). Each bold design encourages people to use public transport, cycle or walk instead of using the car as part of the Borough of Poole's TravelWise Campaign.

The scheme was supported by B&Q (Fleetsbridge) who provided paint and equipment and A1 Hire and Sales with the loan of low-rise scaffold towers which enabled the children to reach the top walls.

During a recent Safer Routes To School survey, the subway came high on the list of "black spots" where pupils felt vulnerable and unsafe.

Teresa Brown, Travel Awareness Officer, Borough of Poole said: "The designs are excellent and we hope that all the hard work will give pupils more pride in their local area and make the subway a less frightening place to walk through. Their designs show what people are missing if they only travel by car - where else do you get to see great artwork like this when walking in Poole!"
