Mayor Les Burden of the Borough of Poole is encouraging everyone to look cool for charity by taking part in The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's Shades for a Day.
Cllr Burden will be amongst thousands of schoolchildren and workers who will be making a donation to wear sunglasses on Tuesday July 13, whilst learning more about eye care, particularly in the sun.
Mayor Les Burden said: “Shades for a Day is a fantastic way to both raise money for Guide Dogs and to highlight an important eye care message for us all.”
To support Shades for a Day, Guide Dogs has created the website www.healthyeyes.org.uk where everyone can find out how to take care of their eyes and also join in Shades for a Day, raising vital funds for the charity. Employees taking part in the event can also download the Eye Kon, a screensaver in reverse which when installed on a PC, flashes up every 90 minutes reminding the user to rest their eyes and take a break.
Guide Dogs is committed to eye health education and has invested more than £8 million into research into the causes of eye conditions.
Tom Pey, Guide Dogs’ for the Blind’s Director of Policy, said: “Funding research into eye diseases is essential to understand the causes of blindness, and how to help prevent sight loss. There are simple measures that everyone can take to look after their eyes and, potentially, save their sight. Shades for a Day is an ideal opportunity to stop and think about eye care, and have fun whilst raising money for our on-going work.”
