TRASH UP YOUR THEATRE

Sculptures created from Poole’s rubbish will be used to inspire a play by young people on Saturday, 3 July at Creekmoor Youth Centre as part of International Co-operative Day.

Scheme sponsors, Co-operative, donated £1000 to Trash, a project developed in partnership by the Borough of Poole to give groups of young people the chance to learn about co-operation and the environment through art.

Working with Word And Action, a community theatre group, young people in foster care, young carers and a group of young people with special needs will be using sculptures of dolphins and the sea, which they have designed, to inspire their performance.

Fay Bowden, from Word And Action said: "We will be working with the group on a piece of theatre using the themes of dolphins and how they are treated. The play will be developed over the course of the day with a one night only performance. No costumes, scenery or props are used. Everything will be played by people - including inanimate objects and the weather, so the performance is entirely unique, often with hilarious results!"

Over the last four weeks, the groups have been working with local artist, Tony Heaton to design their sculptures using recyclable cans donated by Perry’s Recycling, spray paint, nails, timber and other materials donated by B&Q (Fleetsbridge).

Caroline Tendler, Chair of Co-operative’s Wessex Member Relations Committee said: "It has been fantastic to see how this project has sparked the imagination of all the young people involved. It is a great example of what can be achieved when people work together. I can’t wait to see the play and hope that everyone taking part enjoys the performance as much as the audience are sure to."
