6 Jul 99SUMMER FESTIVAL CROWD PLEASERS
A colourful carnival of delights entertained thousands of local people and visitors on Thursday 1 July during the first Liverpool Victoria Summer Festival Evening of 1999. Costumed characters, live music and a spectacular firework display enchanted thousands on Poole Quay and the fun is set to continue throughout the summer.Festival newcomers Gugge 2000, a continental style brass band, in their distinctive costumes gave an exhilarating performance amusing the crowds and local favorites, the Quayside Cloggies, added to the atmosphere.
Event organiser Anne Simpson, Borough of Poole said: "Each night has something for everyone, from the Liverpool Victoria mascots Hen and Chick whose spontaneous performance on the variety stage delighted the crowds, to live music and more traditional entertainment like the Morris Dancers. It was fantastic to see so many people having such a good time and I hope that everyone takes the chance to join in throughout the summer."
The entertainment begins on 6.00 pm and will continue every Thursday evening throughout July and August, ending with an exhilarating fireworks display at approximately 9.50pm.
This week's line up promises even more fun for all the family with first appearance of festival favorite, stiltwalker Barney Bay and young saxophonist Paul Riley. A huge variety of live music to suit every taste is available throughout the night ranging from Jazz at the Custom House to 'Eclipse', a light pop band, who will be performing on the music stage near the Harbourside Craft Centre.
The 2CR Hot 30 show will broadcast live from Poole Quay with presenter Martin Lee from 7-10pm and spectators will be treated to a water-borne demonstration by Dorset Fire and Rescue service.
To allow visitors the chance to walk around events freely and safely, the Quay will be closed to traffic from High Street to Fishermans Dock from 4.00 pm until midnight.
