Budding DiCaprio’s delighted audiences with a once in a life time performance to celebrate International Co-operative Day on 3 July.
In an imaginative performance, aided by Word in Action community theatre group, young people from Poole transformed the town’s rubbish into works of art and inspiration. The play was the exciting finale of Trash, a youth project sponsored by the Co-operative in partnership with the Borough of Poole, which gave groups the chance to learn about co-operation and the environment.
Clare Griffiths, Youth Worker, Borough of Poole said: "Because the play was developed by the group over the course of the day, no one was sure what to expect. During the performance, Poole turned into a nightmare ‘Can City’, with the harbour full of rubbish and local sea life dying. Fortunately a dustbin lady helped by Batman and Robin, who were on holiday, saved the day and no one ever dropped litter in Poole again!"
Over the last four weeks, young people in foster care, young carers and young people with special needs have worked together on a series of sculptures with local artist, Tony Heaton. Using recyclable cans donated by Perry’s Recycling, spray paint, nails, timber and other materials donated by B&Q (Fleetsbridge), the sculptures with their themes of the sea and Dolphins were used to inspire the play.
Caroline Tendler, Chair of Co-operative’s Wessex Member Relations Committee said: "Working on the sculpture gave everyone the chance to use tools and equipment they have never used before and although many of the group were performing for the first time, they overcame any nerves and put on a fantastic show. Everyone seems to have enjoyed the hard work which has given them confidence, the chance to make new friends and learn about the environment and how we can protect it."
