JUDGES CHECK OUT 'BLOOMING' POOLE

Two judges visit Poole tomorrow (Wednesday 21 July 1999) to assess its floral displays and features for the Southern England in Bloom competition.

This year, judges Peter Maunder and Peter Collett will travel in style around Poole’s horticultual displays in a vintage open top bus.

The judges, along with Poole in Bloom representatives and officers from Borough of Poole Leisure Services, will start at Victoria School, Lindsay Road and finish at Upton Country Park.

During the morning they will also visit Sandbanks, Poole Park, Poole Quay including the Cockle Trail, Hillbourne Middle School, Tatnam Organic Patch and Princess Gardens, the Borough’s newest park which was opened yesterday by the Mayor Cllr Bill Wretham.

Poole is in the City category of Southern England in Bloom, which includes towns and cities with a population of between 70,000 and 150,000. Other entries in the category include Basingstoke, Rushmoor, Fareham and Gosport.

Last year Poole was pipped at the post by Rushmoor for the Southern England in Bloom title, although the town achieved its highest ever score -– 226 out of 250, receiving the fourth highest mark of all the 39 entries in Southern England in Bloom.

Clive Smith, Parks and Open Spaces Manager said: "We have a number of new attractions this year which I’m sure that the judges will enjoy, such as the Cockle Trail which guides people around Poole Quay and Old Town and the new park at Princess Gardens. The whole community seems to really enjoy getting involved in Poole in Bloom - from colouring competitions with local schools to local residents groups - this is a real chance for us to show the rest of the South what a beautiful place Poole is."
