LOCAL CHILDREN CREATE A STUNNING MOSAIC FOR POOLE PARK

Wessex Water has this year been working in Poole Park on a major flood prevention scheme for the Park and its immediate surrounding area. This has involved the construction of a large storage tank and the installation of necessary control equipment. In order not to spoil the ambience of the Park, an imaginative scheme to house the equipment necessary for this project devised. A small brick and stone mock Victorian building has been constructed adjacent the cycle track and cricket pitch to house it. The building has been designed to offer seating for people watching activities in the park, the wall behind this seat offering the opporunity for a piece of public art.

The project has involved Wessex Water, Borough of Poole (Cultural Services), artist Stephanie Roberts and 11 year old children from Baden-Powell and St Peter's C.E. (V.C) Middle School working together. The children have studied how water affects out environment and different ways in which we use water to enhance how daily lives. From this has evolved a stunning design done by the children that will add to the atmosphere of the Park. Artist Stephanie Roberts has been working with the children since early June to create the design and make the mosaic. The artist will be installing the mosaic in the shelter during the first week of the school holidays, week commencing 26th July. The culmination of all their work will be the unvailing of the plaque by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Bill Wretham. This will take place 10.00am on Tuesday 14th September 1999.

Anne Partington-Omar (Arts & Heritage Manager) says "This has been an exciting project where local children have worked looking at environmental issues that effect all our lives. The things that they have discovered have been used to create a stunning piece of public art that will form a part of Poole Park, a placed loved by many local people".
