NEW PROJECT TO STOP VIOLENCE AT HOME

A new scheme to support those experiencing in domestic violence is now available in Poole.

An experienced Domestic Violence Worker will give special advice and support to victims through Poole’s new Research and Advice Project (Domestic Violence), RAP dv.

The Borough of Poole is working in partnership with Raglan Housing Association on a new two-year project which gives vital personal help to victims, researching their needs, both immediate and long-term.

Anny Gilchrist, Project Manager, Raglan Housing Association said: "Domestic violence is not only physical mistreatment. It is a pattern of intimidation which tends to get worse rather than better over time. Through this project, we hope that anyone suffering domestic violence will become aware of the help that is available and get in touch."

Domestic violence may involve threats, humiliation, enforced sexual relations, or a physical attack such as kicking. As many as one in three women have experienced violence from a partner worse than being grabbed or pushed but only 2% of violent attacks are ever reported to the Police.

Cllr Mrs Jane James, Chairman of the Social Services Committee, said:
"Domestic violence can affect anyone and this new service will give people in Poole who suffer its effects accessible, confidential and practical support. The Borough of Poole is working with other local agencies to make sure that anyone who experiences domestic violence feels they can seek help. No two cases are ever the same, so we need to make sure that we provide a dedicated and flexible service which gives the best and most appropriate support for each individual situation."

Training on domestic violence issues and how to respond is available to all Borough of Poole employees. The protocol for employees stresses the need to take reports of violence seriously and to protect safety and confidentiality whilst helping those involved to make informed decisions about the action they want to take.
