STREET PARTY IN POOLE MILLENNIUM STYLE

Poole people are being encouraged to celebrate the new millennium ‘Rio style’.

Plans to rival the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, the world’s largest street festival, are underway as residents from Canford Heath work on their own street festival.

Cllr Graham Curtis, Ward Member for Canford Heath said: "Although the Rio Carnival can boast more than 2 million people, I’m sure Poole can rival it in atmosphere and enthusiasm. With more cul-de-sacs than any other area in the town, Canford Heath is the ideal place to host street parties. We would like to see as many people in the town as possible take up the challenge and make Poole’s street party the place to be this year!"

Canford Heath is leading the way with a Millennium Group set up by local residents to organise street parties across the Heath. Suggested dates for parties include 31 December 1999 as well as possible dates throughout the Millennium Year, May Day, Midsummer’s Day or August Bank Holiday.

Steve Tite, Highways Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "If you are thinking of holding a street party this New Year, you need to apply for a road closure now. To help people organise and enjoy their street party safely, we have produced some practical guidelines on how to apply. To help events run smoothly, people should remember to check with neighbours and other residents, making sure they are aware and in favour before applying for a closure - the last thing you would want is to start the new millennium with an un-neighbourly dispute!"

An information pack which includes a road closure application form is available from Transportation Services, Borough of Poole. Anyone interested in holding a millennium street party can contact Roy Jones on tel: (01202) 262074.
