4 Aug 99ART DECO FLATS WIN POOLE PRIDE OF PLACE AWARD
A recreation of art deco luxury has scooped this year's prestigious Poole Pride of Place Awards. The development of nine flats, each with magnificent views of Poole Harbour, at Conning Towers, Haven Road, Canford Cliffs, have been awarded the prize for 1999.
The annual award, made for buildings and landscape which make the greatest contribution in any year to the quality and appearance of Poole, was chosen from 10 entries.
The restored 1934 Art Deco house and new block of four flats have spectacular views of Poole Harbour. Dramatic sweeping balconies reminiscent of a ship's prow form a hallmark feature of the new flats. Judges were delighted with the quality of the building's design and the strong nautical feel which reflected the tradition of Poole's maritime character.
Mayor, Councillor Bill Wretham, said: "This year's entries were extremely varied but everyone felt that the development at Conning Towers stood out head and shoulders above the rest. It is wonderful to see Poole's history being used to inspire new developments today".
Conning Towers was designed by David Quigley Architects of London, built by EBC Construction Limited from Eastleigh and is owned by High Cliff Developments Limited, based in Wakefield, North Yorkshire. One of the partners in the development was Andrew Keeling, of Andrew Key, Estate Agents of Canford Cliffs.
Councillor Leslie Legg, Chairman of the Planning and Development Committee said: "The atmosphere and design of the building is outstanding and shows what can be achieved by development which is sensitive to its surroundings".
