25 Aug 99PLANNING FOR POOLE'S FUTURE
People in Poole are being asked for their views on a number of key questions facing the town and its future development. The questions, which focus on four key areas, are posed in the Poole Local Plan Review Issues Paper which asks people for their comments, suggestions and opinions on a number of issues.
The four key areas identified in the review are:
Housing: between 1994 -2011, 9,500 new homes, which provide a variety of housing, are needed in Poole. So far, approximately 2,500 have been built.
The Economy: ensuring Poole continues to develop a sustainable, varied, world class, dynamic and innovative business to maintain a prosperous and vibrant local economy.
Transport: Rush hour traffic will be a 24 hour problem by 2010 if car use continues on current trends. The issues paper looks at ways to reduce pollution and congestion in Poole by reducing the need to travel and providing alternatives to the car including efficient public transport and cycle links.
Central Area/Town Centre: supporting the development of the heart of Poole as a place to live, work, shop and socialise for residents and visitors.
Poole's Local Plan, officially adopted last August, sets out policies and proposals for the development of land in Poole until 2001. The review will extend these polices until 2011 in line with the Dorset Structure Plan.
The closing date for comments is 30 September 1999. Responses will be used to guide the policies in the revised Local Plan, due for publication in April 2000.
Cllr Bob Williams, Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee said: "We will need to take some key decisions over the next few years that will affect everyone in the town. We want to make sure that everyone in Poole has the opportunity to shape our future. The local plan has a vital role in planning how we will live, work and travel as well as the role of the town centre, which many people see as the heart of the town. How do you want to see Poole develop in the future? This is your chance let us know".
