FREE COURSE FOR CARERS

A free course is being offered to anyone in Poole caring for a relative or friend at home.

Carers are people who have someone dependent on them for help with daily living because of an illness or disability. They can be any age, including children and young people.

The Borough of Poole Social Services Project provides sessions on carers rights, claiming benefits, understanding how Social Services work, care techniques including back care for those who need to lift or move others and safety in the home.

Val Mitchell, Carers Support Officer for Borough of Poole Social Services said: "Just meeting with other carers can be really supportive. The course will offer a valuable opportunity for carers to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence that can help caring at home less stressful".

Dee Shorrock, a carer from Merley who attended the course in February, said: "I would highly recommend the course to other carers. It gives you a chance to share experiences with people who understand exactly what is involved in caring and hear practical advice from professionals. I think most people who look after someone will find the course really helpful".

The 8 week course starts on Wednesday 30 September at East Gate Lodge, Poole Park from 11am - 2pm. Help with arranging a low cost sitting service to look after the cared for person is also be available to carers who wish to attend the course.

Anyone interested in attending the course or would like further information on Carers can contact Val Mitchell on Tel: (01202) 261174
