POOLE'S SOCIAL SERVICES PRAISED

Social Services in Poole have been singled out for praise in the 1998/9 Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Social Services.

The only Local Authority to be named in the report, Modern Social Services - A Commitment to Improve, Poole is praised for its radical structure of Policy Directors and Service Units rather than the traditional Social Services Department.

The Borough is named as an example of good practice by a Lay Assessor who calls the service in Poole, "The most encouraging thing I have seen in five years..."

The Lay Assessor adds: "In Poole, an alternative management structure, together with a culture of service to the citizens in Poole has its origins amongst elected members. These have been taken up enthusiastically by the strategic directors, resulting in genuine delegation to operational managers with remarkably positive effects on motivation, efficiency and co-operation across departments."

Cllr Jane James, Chairman of the Social Services Committee said: "Staff have worked with exceptional dedication and enthusiasm to make sure that the best services possible are provided for people in Poole. Recognition of their work in the Chief Inspector's report shows just how much has been achieved. By continuing to listen to the community, we will ensure this work continues, so that the needs of local people are met with the services they want."
