ARTS IN THE PARK

A stunning mosaic designed by young people from Poole will be unveiled by Mayor Cllr Bill Wretham in Poole Park on Tuesday 14 September 1999.

The mosaic, sponsored by Wessex Water and supported by the Borough of Poole's Cultural Services, has been installed on the new control building constructed by Wessex Water at the northern end of Poole Park. The building is part of a scheme to relieve the overloading of sewers in Sandbanks road and improve the quality of water discharged into Poole Harbour.

Artist, Stephanie Roberts, worked with pupils from Baden Powell and St Peter's Middle School, Parkstone to create the eye catching design. Inspired by the themes of water and the environment, the mosaic features a colourful ship on the ocean surrounded by flowers and butterflies.

Stephanie Roberts said: "The initial designs for the project began in June and involved the whole year group. Since then a smaller group of students have been working really hard to bring together all the elements they wanted to see in the mosaic. The themes of water and the environment really seem to have caught everyone's imagination and have made this a really exciting project to work on."

ART IN THE PARK: Continued

Graham Davison Smith, Wessex Water Engineer, said: "The location of the small control building, offered a great opportunity for us to provide some extra seating and an ideal spot for some public art. Seeing the final design come together has been amazing and I'm sure the mosaic will add to the enjoyment of everyone using the park."
