DO YOUR BIT - RECYCLE IT

Wimbledon's wisest Womble, Uncle Bulgaria will be joining local children and clients from Fourways day centre to launch a new aluminium recycling scheme.

The scheme has been extended from Poole and Bournemouth to East Dorset where four new foil collection banks have been installed. Under the scheme, local people are encouraged to help their community and the environment by recycling their aluminium foil.

Foil from the banks is collected and compressed by Fourways, Lodge Hill and Brownsea Day Centres who then sell the bales for recycling. In addition to providing vocational experience for the clients, all funds raised will be used for the benefit of people attending the day centres.

The Borough of Poole, Bournemouth Borough Council and East Dorset District Council are working in partnership with the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) and the day centres on the scheme.

Louise Lowans, Recycling Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "Clean aluminium foil such as ready meal containers, pie cases, wrapping foil, dairy lidding and chocolate foil are ideal and can be recycled at any one of the 23 banks in the area. Although we are unable to recycle metallised plastic such as crisp and snack packets, there is still plenty of foil packaging which can be recycled more than once and will help raise money for the local community".

Uncle Bulgaria will also present the 1998 Foil Recycling prizes to local primary schools who collected aluminium foil during 1998 on behalf of Animal Ambulance.

Any schools interested in collecting foil and raising money for the day centres should contact the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation, telephone 08457 227722.
