POOLE HOSTS SOUTHERN ENGLAND IN BLOOM PRESENTATIONS

Blooming Poole will take centre stage when the town hosts the Southern England in Bloom Awards on Wednesday 14 October 1999.

Organised by the Southern Tourist Board, the competition encourages communities of all sizes to enhance their area through the use of trees, shrubs, flowers and imaginative landscaping.

This year's awards will be presented by Mrs Gilly Drummond, Chairman of the Judges and Michael Green, Chairman of the Southern England Tourist Board.

With 40 competitors, Poole was pipped at the post by Rushmoor, Hampshire, coming runner up in the category for towns and cities with a population of 70,000 to 150,000.

In addition to hosting the event attended by representatives from Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight, Poole will collect an award for the Borough's highly commended Cockle Trail.

Clive Smith, Parks and Open Spaces Manager, said: "We are honoured to be hosting this year's awards ceremony and although we were disappointed to be in second place, the town did exceptionally well. The judges especially enjoyed new features like Poole's newest park, Princess Gardens which was developed with residents and pupils from St Aldhelms, Heatherlands First and Courthill First Schools."
