Showcase Celebrates Youth Projects

A showcase of exciting youth projects - run by young people for young people in Poole - is being staged at the RNLI's link will open in new window Lifeboat College on March 8 from 4.30 - 8.00 pm.

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt and other invited guests will join up to 50 young people and their adult supporters to celebrate the success of a host of youth projects across the Borough.

Funded by £150,000 from the Department for Education and Skills link will open in new window (DfES), as part of the Youth Opportunity Fund link will open in new window (YOF) and Youth Capital Fund link will open in new window (YCF), the scheme encourages young people to come up with ideas for youth projects in their community.

Borough of Poole invited young people to devise and run their own innovative youth projects in the town. A judging panel of young people looked at the merits of each project and allocated money to the successful bids.

One of the successful projects to receive £31,000 is the SHOKK GYM at Carter Sports College, providing gym equipment specifically designed for young people.

The SHOKK GYM project has now been put forward as Poole's entry to the DfES national competition, 'Action Speak Louder'. A total of 15 winners will be chosen from around the country to receive prize money of up to £45,000 to expand and develop the project.

The national winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on March 29.

Other successful Poole projects being showcased at the RNLI event include; a new kitchen at Limelights, a youth club on Canford Heath, which received £6,500 of funding to offer young people a chance to develop healthy lifestyles, and a computer programme to help young people plan walking routes while taking the Duke of Edinburgh, which received £795.00.

Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Youth Services, said: " I am amazed at the quality of the projects that have been developed by young people and the mature way in which they have acted as project leaders and decision-makers."

Christine White, Principal Youth Officer, said: "This competition is an ideal way to bring these projects to the attention of a wider audience and to celebrate the achievements of young people in Poole."
