25 Oct 99INVESTING TO SAVE FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS
Options to increase the benefit of Government funding for local schools will be considered by the Borough of Poole's Education Committee at a meeting on 26 October 1999.£770,000 has been awarded to replace mobile classrooms and provide extra classrooms in three schools as part of the Government's drive to achieve class sizes of 30.
Studies by the Borough of Poole have shown approximately £129,000 savings will be made if additional work needed by the schools is completed at the same time as work funded by the Government.
The estimated savings include:
· £26,000 - Springdale First School by investing £125,000 to replace a temporary classroom
· £43,000 - Heatherlands First School by investing £67,000 to provide a tutorial, small meeting room and new corridor to aid circulation
· £60,000 - Broadstone Middle School by investing £80,000 to provide specialist facilities for science, music, art and textiles
Councillor Annette Brooke, Chairman of Education Committee, said: "We have fought hard to bring much needed improvements to our school buildings. In order to use this money in the most effective way we have looked at the long term needs of each school. By including the additional work now, we can achieve the best possible use of our resources and ensure that all our children benefit".
Vic Sandel, Head of Education Policy and Planning, said: "All pupils in Poole have an entitlement to learn in suitable school buildings. Our three year programme of investment will ensure schools receive the funding they need to continue to improve their standards".
