15 Dec 99GOVERNMENT MINISTER CONGRATULATES POOLE
The Minister for the Cabinet Office, Dr Marjorie Mowlam MP, (Mo Mowlam), today sent congratulations to the Borough of Poole for adopting the Government’s Enforcement Concordat for regulatory services.
The Enforcement Concordat is a Local Authority and Central Government partnership which sets out clear standards businesses can expect from Local Authority regulators. The Concordat’s key theme is co-operation with local businesses and applies to all of the Council’s regulatory roles including Trading Standards, Planning, Building Control, Environmental Health and Social Services.
The statement from Mo Mowlam, reads: "I am delighted that the Borough of Poole have today joined the growing number of local authorities who have adopted the Enforcement Concordat. The Concordat is a key strand in the Government’s policy to maintain a fair and safe market place. It helps ensure that British business and in particular, small businesses, don’t suffer from over burdensome enforcement of regulations".
Cllr Brian Clements, Leader of the Council, Borough of Poole, said: "The Concordat commits the Council to working with reputable businesses in a co-operative way. This will help them to flourish and give the community confidence in the goods and services they buy. It will also allow us to target the rogues and cheats who prey on the vulnerable".
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, added: "We are currently developing a number of schemes to help support businesses to comply with ever more complex and technical legislative requirements. We do however have enforcement powers and I can, promise those who deliberately cheat the public, a hard time".
