POOLE'S SUCCESSFUL £1 MILLION CCTV BID

The Borough of Poole’s Crime and Disorder Partnership has been successful in its bid for Government funding for CCTV in Poole.

Funding of £953,360 has been awarded under the Government’s CCTV initiative to provide 24 hour monitored CCTV for Poole’s town centre car parks, the High street, the Quay and Turlin Moor.

Cllr Brian Clements, Leader of the Council, said: "This funding will benefit everyone by helping to reduce crime in our car parks and making people feel safer in Poole. Local people have told us when and where they have felt vulnerable and we have used this information to make this such a convincing bid. By working in partnership with Dorset Police and all those involved in the project we can ensure the whole community feel secure and able to enjoy all Poole has to offer".

Successful bids also met strict Home Office criteria by demonstrating greater efficiency and improved services which meet the needs of local people.

Under the scheme, 14 fixed and two mobile cameras will cover areas including Poole Bus Station, the High Street and town centre car parks. Local shops, a community centre, Hamworthy Railway Station and over 1000 homes will be covered by 6 cameras in Turlin Moor.

Superintendent Paul Bompas, Divisional Commander of Poole Police, said: "The success of this bid is due to the hard work and support of everyone involved. Without the help and financial contribution of local businesses and the support of residents we would not have won the bid. CCTV will never replace Police Officers but is a powerful crime prevention tool to reduce crime and disorder as part of a wider package of measures. Perhaps most importantly however, CCTV is proven to reduce the fear of crime.
