11 Mar 04Poole Wardens given special award
The judges at the 2004 British Parking Awards gave Poole parking wardens a special award at a ceremony on Friday 20 February at the Victoria Park Plaza in London. The awards are the Oscars of the parking world and include categories such as Best ‘on street’ operation, Manager of the Year, best innovative system to name but a few and are open to both private and public sector organisations. This year’s ceremony was organised by the Parking Review Magazine and was sponsored by NCP, Equita and Euro Car Parks and was supported by the British Parking Association. Motoring journalist and television presenter Richard Hammond, gave the awards. Poole’s wardens were given the award in recognition of their hard work and dedication, alongside Poole’s Travelwise team, to make parents aware of the dangers of parking in the zig-zag area outside first, middle and combined schools in Poole.
Working with children from these schools the two teams held a poster design competition. The prizes for the winning entries were presented by the Mayor in the Dolphin Centre with the two overall winners receiving a family pass to Monkey World.

Richard Hein, Parking Services Manager, Transportation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "It is often difficult to get the message across so we had to consider a different angle. It seemed to make sense that the children should be the ones communicating with their parents so we asked them to design a poster. We had a huge response and it was an extremely successful campaign. The judges at the awards were really impressed that we had involved the children and the schools and we have been asked us to publish our methods as part of a best practice procedure. This was a real boost for our teams, and it’s very nice to be able to put out some good news"
