22 Jul 04Poole's youth in D-Day Commemorations
Ten members of Poole Youth Forum will share their experiences of a special visit to Cherbourg when they took part in the town’s D-Day commemorations.
During an evening of poems, art, photography and slides, the young people will feed back what they learnt to an invited group including Royal British Legion veterans from the D-Day campaign, who helped them prepare for their weekend.
Peter Read, Head of Youth Services, Borough of Poole, said: “This project was partly funded by the young people themselves but we are also grateful for the additional support they received from the Poole-Cherbourg Twinning Committee, the Beacon Centre and Kapra residential homes for the elderly at Canford Heath.”
Kelly Meyrick, who went on the trip, said: “As well as meeting veterans and visiting all the D-Day sites, during our three day trip, we also went to a party at the Cherbourg Youth Council at the Maison pour Tous, a brand new youth and community centre in Octeville, so we met French young people as well.”
Jacob Waters added: “The highlight of the trip for me, was a ceremony when medals were presented to the D-Day veterans for their services to the campaign.”
The evening of reflection and thanks will be held at the Civic Centre from 7 till 8 pm, 11 August when light refreshments will be provided.
