Don't Pay The Penalty This World Cup

With the World Cup just around the corner the Borough of Poole’s Environmental & Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS) is warning consumers not to be caught out by counterfeit products on sale during the competition this summer. As the tournament begins next month, it is expected that the fakers will be looking to cash in with many football related products being copied.

Shaun Robson Head of Service says; “Although many brands are a focus for the counterfeiters, football kits are always a prime target.  Consumers need to be wary when buying such products, especially if buying on the internet. Without being able to check and examine the items yourself, you may be less able to spot a fake.”

Shaun advises that relying on price alone is also no guarantee that the goods are authentic. He says; “With prices for imitation goods rising, old assumptions that a higher price equals genuine can no longer be made. With the fall in price of authentic shirts, fake items are often priced the same as the genuine item”.

Trading Standards staff around the country are gearing themselves up for a busy few weeks in their battle to stop football’s counterfeiters ripping off the public and the Football Association . E&CPS advises England fans who want to show their support this summer to always buy from a reputable seller.

Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment says “Product counterfeiting hits everyone in the pocket especially legitimate tax paying businesses who lose sales, and the public who get a poorer quality product. Whatever team you follow make sure you are supporting the right side this World Cup and ensure that the counterfeiters are not the real winners!
