THE WALLS CAME TUMBLING DOWN

Major redevelopment work to the area outside St. John’s Church, Ashley Road is due to commence on Monday 28th February, as part of the Borough of Poole’s ongoing project to improve the environment of Ashley Road, Parkstone.

The Parochial Church Council of St. John’s have been working closely with the Borough of Poole on a project to remove the existing church ground walls and open up a large paved area with seating, trees and shrubs, new railings and a new bus shelter.

The vicar of St. John’s, Rev. Graham Loughlin, said : "We at St. John’s Church are most anxious that our church should present an open welcome to members of the public. One of the best ways seemed to be to take down the wall in front of the church and create a public space. This will mean that thanks to the Borough of Poole, Poole’s second largest shopping area will now have its very own attractive garden. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption that may be caused, but feel that everyone will appreciate the work once it is completed."

The garden’s shrubs and trees will include a number not normally found outside Mediterranean climates, which have been chosen for their Biblical connections. An information sheet and guided walks will also be available for any local schools and organisations that are interested in the garden.

Many of the 14 seats that are being provided for the public area, have already been sponsored by Parkstone residents and will feature plaques in memory of family and friends. If you wish to sponsor a seat, please contact the churchwarden tel. 01202 700795.

Work will take approximately 6 weeks. It is expected that the dedication of the area will take place sometime in May 2000.
