Local people with disabilities are helping to improve the design of innovative new buses in Poole.

The Borough of Poole’s Disabled Design Group are working with local bus company, Wilts and Dorset in the design of the pioneering new low floor "Solo" minibus.

Andrew Jarvis, District Manager for Wilts and Dorset, said: "Over the past 18 months we have spent over £4 million replacing all our old style minibuses. We now have 55 revolutionary new wheelchair and pushchair accessible "Solo" minibuses and have been overwhelmed by the positive response from our customers".

He added: "Since the new buses were introduced, there has been a big increase in the number of parents travelling with buggies. This has occasionally led to problems with some visually impaired people tripping over the buggies. We are delighted the Disabled Design Group and the Borough of Poole will be working with us to overcome these problems so we can make an excellent bus even better".

Teresa Brown, Travel Awareness Officer for the Borough of Poole, said: "We are very pleased that once again this partnership approach has proved to be of great value to the disabled people of Poole and its local Bus Company."

The Disabled Design Group includes local residents with a range of disabilities who advise on the design of traffic schemes including footpaths and road crossings in Poole.
