PROTECTING PEOPLE IN CARE

New arrangements to provide greater protection of people living in residential and nursing homes are being lead by the Borough of Poole and Dorset Health Authority.

To aid closer working, the two Registration and Inspection Units will be jointly managed by Mark Goodman, the current Head of Inspection for Poole from March 2000.

Each service carries out twice yearly inspections, monitoring and registering homes for older people as well as for adults and children with special needs. Under the new arrangements, the services will be responsible for residential care homes in Poole and all Nursing Homes across the county of Dorset.

Mark Goodman, Head of Registration and Inspection, said: "We are constantly looking to ensure that high standards of care are provided for everyone living in residential care and nursing homes. This is an exciting opportunity which will help us to regulate homes consistently so they can concentrate on providing the care needed by residents. By building strong links within health and social care we can give more protection and ensure the needs of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities are met".

As well as inspecting homes, both services investigate complaints about care in homes and register new home proprietors as well as de-registering people where necessary.

Councillor Jane James, Chair of the Social Services Committee, said: "It is good news that Poole, the smallest local authority has been able to negotiate this arrangement, which, I believe will increase local protection to people in care."

The new arrangements will also help preparations for the Government’s new National Care Standards Commission scheduled for 1st April 2002 which is re-examining the way in which Inspections Units work.
