POOLE HARBOUR RE-OPENED FOR SHELLFISH

Further Department of Health testing has shown that the shellfish in Poole Harbour is now safe to eat. As a result, Poole Council has lifted the temporary fishing ban which was imposed on 10 March 2000.

This means that fishing for cockles, oysters, mussels and clams is now permitted. All commercial fishermen have been informed and signs will be placed around the Harbour to advise the public .

Peter Pawlowski Head of Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole said
'I would like to praise local fishermen for their assistance and co-operation in not fishing whilst the ban was in place and in helping us to ensure that any potentially affected shellfish was withdrawn from sale.'

No reports of shellfish related illness has been reported to date. Regular testing will continue to ensure shellfish remain safe to eat.
