10 Feb 05Successful Crack Down on Fly-Tippers
The Borough of Poole is cracking down on fly-tippers dumping rubbish across the town - that’s the warning to those flouting the law. The warning comes after the Council successfully secured prosecutions against two individuals last month who, in separate incidences, dumped garden waste and household waste on public land. The offences where brought under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Dumping rubbish is illegal and dangerous. It can ruin the appearance of a neighbourhood and costs tax payers’ money to clean up. If you fly-tip you are committing a serious criminal offence and can be prosecuted. Peter Pawlowski, Head of Environmental and Consumer Protection, Borough of Poole, said: "We are pleased that the court saw it appropriate to issue penalties for these cases and hope this will send a clear message that fly-tipping will not be tolerated. It is an increasingly costly problem and when it occurs, it blights our beautiful town." If you are considering paying for someone else to dispose of waste on your behalf, the Borough of Poole recommends you check that you are using a reputable company or individual. You should also know where they plan to take your waste and be sure to get a receipt. By following these simple guidelines you greatly reduce the likelihood of your waste being fly-tipped and the Council having to pursue enforcement action against you. Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "Fly-tipping is an anti social activity which costs the community thousands of pounds each year to clean up. We want to encourage people to take Pride in Poole and respect their surroundings. However we will not hesitate to prosecute those who abuse our environment though their irresponsible actions."
