6 Jun 02Carers Week 10 - 16 June 2002
£31billion per year is saved in the U.K. by ordinary people who look after someone who needs care due to age, disability or long term health problems. Poole will be recognising this in events that will take place across the Borough as part of this years National Carers Week.
Cllr Jane James, Executive Portfolio Holder for Tackling Disadvantage, said: "There are many local organisations that can offer support and help to carers who sometimes find the experience lonely and isolating. The information provided at Carers Week events will help people tackle some of the many difficulties faced by those care for someone at home. It is important that we recognise the special qualities and contributions made by carers."
Activities throughout the week include an information stand in the Dolphin Centre between 10am - 4pm on Wednesday 12 June and a lunchtime workshop on Friday 14 June where carers can have their say about how services might be best developed in the future. Esporta Health Club will also be sponsoring a pampering day for local carers.
Val Mitchell, Carers Development Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "Carers Week is especially for people who are looking after relatives or friends at home. It is estimated that 31,000 children undertake some kind of caring activity. Whilst many people find caring a rewarding activity, it can also be tiring, stressful and isolating. During the week there will be a range of activities focused on the needs of those who are caring for someone who is elderly, disabled or frail. It is a chance for carers to meet and get vital information and advice to help them."
She added: "All those who are caring are also very welcome to attend the Carers Network Group on Tuesday 11 June at Longfleet Baptist Church from 10.30am -12.30pm. This group of carers meet regularly for support and information."
Poole Social Services has many initiatives which run throughout the year that can support carers including services that offer practical help, carers courses and support groups. A special radio station available on the internet has also been set up for Carers week: www.careradio.co.uk.
