Algae Returns To Poole Park Lake

Samples of water taken recently from Poole Park Lake by Borough of Poole officers and analysed by the Environment Agency have been found to contain blue-green algae.

This algae is a natural inhabitant of many inland waters, estuaries and the sea. It is capable of producing toxins that can be dangerous. The lake in Poole Park can therefore not be used at present in order to avoid direct contact with the algae.

The Park and all the other attractions are open as usual and there is no risk to anyone using the park. Visitors to the park are advised to avoid contact with the water in the large salt-water lake. The small lakes near Signet Continental Cafe are not affected.

Should accidental contact be made with contaminated water, it is only necessary to consult a doctor if illness occurs. Symptoms can include skin rashes, eye irritation and pain in muscles and joints.

Animals may also contract illness and even die if they drink contaminated water. Pet owners are advised to take precautions to prevent their animals gaining access to the lake water.

Matti Raudsepp, Open Spaces Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "Staff are monitoring the situation and taking samples to ensure that the lake can be reopened as soon as possible. In the meantime, signs are being erected pointing out the risks. We are not alone in experiencing this problem, it occurs all over the country and we are doing all we can to find a way of restoring the natural balance."
