29 May 02Tarmac Gangs Target Poole
Poole residents are being warned that tarmac gangs are operating in the area. Information reported to the Borough of Poole’s Consumer Protection Services indicates that at least three different gangs have been active in Poole within the last month.
The gangs are going from door to door offering to tarmac drives, often claiming that they are working on a project nearby and have some spare tarmac. One gang has claimed to work for the Borough of Poole. If a resident shows an interest, the gangs will rip up the existing drive as soon as possible to discourage a change of mind.
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, said: "Don’t feel pressured into agreeing to have work done. If a trader is genuine he will be prepared to give you the opportunity to get quotes from other companies and then compare prices. You can then make your own decision and won’t feel as if you have been pushed into it - don't be afraid to say NO!"
Payment by cash is often demanded and the standard 7 days cooling off period in which to cancel the agreement is refused. Failure to give a notice explaining these cancellation rights is a criminal offence. Very often, once work has started, the gangs demand more money before they finish the job.
Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Portfolio Holder for Environment & Prosperity, said: "Residents are urged to think carefully before agreeing to have their drive re-laid. Even if the price seems reasonable, there will be nothing to fall back on if the new drive is of poor quality."
