Fishermen's Dock Clean Up

The Borough of Poole has joined forces with the Freemasons of Poole and the Fisherman’s Association to remove the large amounts of litter and waste at Fisherman’s Dock.

As part of the Pride in Poole campaign more than 20 volunteers worked together on Sunday 28 April 2002 to remove litter and waste debris from the area. Items removed included large amounts of polystyrene, remains of fibre glass boats and general litter including quantities of glass. In total 30 refuse sacks were filled along with 3 skips.

Ron Kiver of the Freemasons of Poole, said: "The team enjoyed the challenge of clearing the site and seeing the results of their hard work. The Freemasons of Poole will be in further discussion with the Council to try and resolve the ongoing problems with the site which may involve looking into sponsorship of the area."

Fisherman’s Dock, as it is locally known, has been an area of concern for many residents and visitors and follows efforts made by the Fisherman’s Association to clear the site of disused boats and fishing equipment that have caused concern to both the public and the Council. The Borough of Poole is currently in discussions with the Fishermen’s Association on how best to manage the site for the future.

Councillor Clements, Leader of the Council, said: "This is an area much loved by residents and visitors of Poole, however it is important that we remember that this area is also a working boatyard for local fishermen. The clear up and discussions are a good example of the Council working with local businesses and organisations to find solutions to historical problems. The aim of this partnership will be to maintain the site as a working boatyard whilst improving the appearance of the area."

Prior to the clean up, fishermen spent two afternoons removing and destroying old boats and trailers which had been dumped over a number of years. Ian Davies of The Fishermen’s Association, said: "Although our members would normally be busy fishing they were keen to be involved in improving the area for visitors."
