Sheltered Homes Open Up For People In Poole

The Borough of Poole will be opening its doors for local people to have a look and find out more about sheltered homes. As part of National Sheltered Housing Awareness Week (20 - 25 May 2002) there will be an open day on Tuesday 21 May between 10am - 1pm at five venues across the Borough:

  • Hinchliffe Close, Hamworthy
  • Dale Valley Road, Oakdale
  • Cinnamon Lane, Poole Town
  • Trinidad House, Rossmore Road
  • Phyldon Close, Parkstone

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment & Prosperity, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for people to go along and have a look at a sheltered home and how it can benefit someone's quality of life. We have a lot to offer with sheltered homes all over the Borough. By encouraging people to move to sheltered homes where it will clearly benefit them, we are also helping to make available properties that may be suitable for families to move into and tackling the problem of affordable housing in Poole."

The Borough has 1300 sheltered homes, all of which have their own front door and enable the owner to remain independent whilst also providing a safety net for those who may be vulnerable. All homes are fitted with pull-cord emergency alarms and have a manager on site, in a separate office, for support if needed.

Joe Logan, Head of Housing Management Services, said: "Our aim is to make sure that sheltered homes fully support people's independence. We want to make sure services are flexible and focused on the changing needs of our residents. These are lovely homes with attractive gardens which provide opportunities for individuals to feel safe, secure and comfortable in supported surroundings whilst keeping an independent life. I would encourage anyone who has considered this or maybe thought about it for the future, to come and have a look and see how lovely they are."

Tea and biscuits will be available on the day along with the chance to chat to residents and staff about sheltered accommodation. Information will also be available on Housing Benefit, Social Services, Tenant Participation, Lifeline Service, Community Safety and proposals for the review and improvements to Housing Management Services.
