13 May 02Poole Retailers Stamp Out Underage Sales
A new scheme aimed at reducing the sale of products such as alcohol to underage people will be launched on 15 May 2002 at Poole Civic Centre.
The ‘Responsible Retailers’ scheme will ensure retailers in Poole are made aware of the laws covering the sale of goods such as alcohol, tobacco, solvents, lottery tickets, videos and fireworks and will show staff the positive ways to deal with suspected underage purchases.
The scheme was initially developed after young people raised concerns about their friends using alcohol and cigarettes.
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, said: "This scheme can be a boon for young people and traders. It can be very difficult to correctly judge age and it is also embarrassing for young people to be prevented from purchasing a product that they are perfectly entitled to if they are old enough. A high take up of the scheme will go a long way to reducing those potentially difficult moments."
The scheme is linked to the distribution of proof of age cards which will be made available through Poole’s schools. The cards, which must include an up to date photograph of the user can be shown in any of the retail outlets as proof of age.
Cllr Bob Williams, Executive spokesperson for Environment and Prosperity, said: "This scheme will support reputable businesses and help ensure that these laws, which are designed to protect young people, are effective. I hope all Poole businesses will support the scheme because it is that commitment which will be the key to its success."
Sergeant John Green from Dorset Police said " We are very pleased to be able to work with Poole Retailers and local schools in partnership to tackle this subject. Health education on smoking and drinking is already carried out in schools and Responsible Retailers goes one step further and encourages young people themselves to get involved in addressing some of the issues that occur every day in our shops."
To mark the launch of the scheme retailers will be presented with certificates to recognise their commitment to the scheme.
