Litter bugs pay the penalty

Since the launch of fixed penalty notices for littering on 6 April, officers from the Borough of Poole have been out and about to ensure that people are throwing their litter in the bin and picking up after their dog has fouled.

The final parts of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 came into force on the 6th April which gives local authorities the power to issue fixed penalty notices for littering in the first instance.

The message has got through to most people, but officers have caught 17 people depositing cigarette related litter irresponsibly, 4 people throwing cigarette butts out of their vehicle window and 2 people not picking up after their dog has fouled.

Those who have been caught littering will be hearing from the Council shortly and may be offered the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty notice.  If paid within 7 days this will be £50 or £75 if paid within 14 days.  Those who choose not to pay will be prosecuted and may face a fine of up to £2,500.

Councillor Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are really pleased that the majority of people are throwing their litter away and picking up after their dog, helping to keep the borough clean, green and safe.  There is no excuse for littering and those that do need to be aware that officers are out and about ensuring that the law is complied with.”

Lucy Magill, Regulatory Services Manager, Environmental and Consumer Protection Services, said: “We are pleased that the education work we have carried out has had an effect and that the majority of people are being law abiding. However it is disappointing that some people are not throwing their cigarette butts in the bin or using a butt holder. Butt holders can be obtained from most Council buildings and we encourage people who smoke to pop in and pick one up.”

Officers will continue to ensure that people are not littering and are abiding the law.
