Wheelie Bin Overload

Poole’s refuse collection service are asking residents to help them to provide an efficient service by not overloading their bins.

Steve Chapple, Team Manager, Consumer Protection Services, said: "Overloaded bins are unfortunately becoming a real problem in the borough. When rubbish is overloaded and bin lids are left open, refuse blows out of the bins and creates litter. Some residents put grass cuttings in their household bin without bagging it up first which makes them much too heavy to lift safely as the grass becomes compact. Not only can this make bins heavy with compacted garden waste but this can also create odour problems, as not all the cuttings are removed when emptied."

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive spokesperson for Environment and Prosperity, said: " Overloading bins can put staff at risk as well as damaging bins and increasing the cost of replacing them. Each wheelie bin is twice the size of the old bins and with all the recycling facilities in the borough no one should have a need to overfill."

Grass cuttings can be easily disposed of by home composting or at the borough’s Nuffield site along with other household waste. Grass can be put in household bins provided they are in bags to ensure they can be emptied safely.

Stickers advising residents of collection and how to help their refuse collectors will soon be appearing on local bins.
