25 Aug 04Bournemouth and Poole Join Forces for Improved Working
There's good news for Bournemouth and Poole residents with their prospective local Councils recently signing a 'Compact' to improve joint working between the two boroughs.
This agreement, signed by the two Chief Executives and Council Leaders, symbolises the determination of the two Councils to work closely together wherever there is likely to be value in doing so. A good example of this work in practice is the harmonisation of cycling restrictions and signage along the Seafront. A joint campaign to give safety messages to seafront cyclists is to be launched, with exercises taking place at Boscombe and Branksome on 2nd and 3rd September. Leaflets detailing restrictions and responsibilities will be available in all Beach offices.
There are a number of criteria for choosing whether to work together on specific issues, for example where it makes sense for the customers and suppliers of the two Councils to have a consistency of policy or procedure.
The following commitments have also been agreed:
- Procurement - we will not undertake significant procurement without first considering the benefits of a joint procurement
- Best practice - we will share the results of reviews, inspections and innovations so that each can learn from the other. We will create joint teams to examine issues, and undertake mutual 'peer reviews' when requested.
- Influencing - when either Council wishes to influence other stakeholders, we will consider whether such approaches might be strengthened by joining forces
- Business Continuity and Mutual Aid - where each can help the other by providing back up and support at times of crisis, we will do so in a planned way.
Borough of Poole Leader, Cllr Dr Brian Leverett, said: "Joint working has recognised benefits for everyone and I am delighted to sign this Compact with our neighbours and partners at Bournemouth. It demonstrates our continued commitment to improving services for local people now and in the future.”
Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, Cllr Dr John Millward,
said: "The two authorities have a long tradition of joint working so I am very pleased to sign this Compact which formalises the work we have undertaken in the past and gives a clear commitment for improving how we work with our good neighbours Poole, in the future."
