Technology to help elderly people maintain their own independence is being showcased by Borough of Poole's Adult Social Care and Well-being team.

People are invited to an 'Assistive Technology Awareness Day' at the Fourways Centre, in Parkstone, on 10 January, between 10am-3pm.

Assistive Technology for the elderly is equipment which improves the quality of life and encourages independent living, while providing peace of mind for family and friends.

Borough of Poole has been awarded a two-year Assistive Technology Grant (ATG) of more than £220,000 by the Department of Health link will open in new windowto provide Assistive Technology to the over-60s.

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Support, said: "We live in a society where elderly people do not need to suffer in silence. Borough of Poole, along with the Department of Health, are hoping to see a rise in the number of older people helped to live at home, thanks to the grant that is now available."

Residents will have a chance to learn more about the equipment and manufacturers will be on hand to answer any questions. Advice will also be available on how to apply for help from the scheme.

Assistive Technology equipment offered by Borough of Poole includes:

· Electronic pill dispensers which remind users when to take their medication
· Bed and chair occupancy sensors which automatically raise the alarm if someone has not gone to bed or got out of bed by a predetermined time.
· Fall detectors which can sense when someone has fallen and automatically raise an alarm to a control centre.

Wendy Goulding, Project Manager Assistive Technology, Adult Social Care and Well-being said: "Assistive Technology can be a lifeline for people over the age of 60. It is the difference between a person maintaining their independence by remaining in their own home or having to move to a care home. This awareness day is an opportunity for elderly people and their friends and family to find out what is available and how it can enhance lives."
