This innovative project that sees the Borough of Poole working alongside Birmingham City Council link will open in new window is responsible for the design and delivery of Single Living Accommodation for the armed forces across numerous sites in Britain. Phase 1 of the project, which is the largest single construction project in Britain, has already delivered 6,500 new or refurbished bed spaces in three years, with a further 3,000 bed spaces currently in construction.

The team received the accolade in front of 500 guests at a ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London, beating competition from the Core Education Centre at the Eden Project link will open in new window and the Chapelfield Shopping Centre link will open in new window, Norwich.

Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy said: "The Royal Marines Base in Poole is an excellent example of the project's work delivering a quality three storey building containing communal areas and 72 en-suite bedrooms over the three storey building. The council works hard to build relationships with other Local Authorities and key partners in the building industry in order to maintain best practice across our town. This is an example of how working together can produce innovative and wide ranging results"
The Borough of Poole was also nominated for three other awards making them the only Authority in 2006 to receive three nominations in the final.

The SLAM Project link will open in new window, selected by the judges from three other final contenders, stood out as a unique achievement in terms of scale of delivery, quality of end product and the essential element of close working relationships required for success. It is the first time that the Borough of Poole, with Birmingham City Council has tackled such an ambitious project as part of a nation wide project involving major public sector partners, Defence Estates link will open in new window and the Contractor, Debut Services Ltd. link will open in new window

Last year the team from Poole also had success at the awards where they were part of the team who were highly commended for the RNLI Lifeboat College link will open in new window and Survival Centre which qualified for the Best Public/Community Project category.

Alan Muzzall, Head of Building Consultancy said: " The Building Consultancy Team have worked extremely hard on Project SLAM and the recognition of this award has shown how successful our partnership has been with both Birmingham City Council and Debut Services - long may it continue."

John Askew, Team Leader for Partnerships at Birmingham Building Consultancy said: "This award recognises that successful working relationships between Local Authorities produce results. This should provide valuable lessons to other Councils and private house builders."
